Business Problems

The project started with stakeholder interview identifying business problems, vision statement, marketing aspects that are summarized as below

  • Increase TRP
  • Improve Cluttered Screen
  • Need more space for promoting advertisements
  • Make channel customizable
  • Need more space for showing Sensex and Gold Rates

 

My Role

I went on hunting and chasing the means to bring ease and simplicity to news viewing experience. Documented stakeholder's interview, user survey, user interview, persona building, user stories, affinity mapping and built prototypes.

 

Challenge

Anxious as it may seem, upon observing viewers use the service, however, there is a slight disconnect in how news channel should ideally work, and how it actually works.

User Research

To gain a deeper understanding about TV News viewers, I interacted with 4 News viewers. Here are the key highlights from these chats:

  • The majority of news viewers are young adults, office goers, home makers and retired persons
  • There are 2 main mediums used by viewers: TV at Home and Online (Desktop, Laptop, Tab, Mobile) at College or Workplace
  • Majority choose TV regularly to watch news
  • They are spontaneous to try everyother news channel if they need to have a quick update
  • The type of viewing experience is also another factor users consider, in that case accurate and ads free is important to users

User Stories

To keep in mind the main problems users faced, and why they would need such a feature, I created some user stories.

Here are some examples of the Epics ("big" user stories):

  • As a regular viewer, I want to view unbiased news, free of ads which are no were of my interest
  • As a regular viewer, I want to set a screen resolution for the tiny subtitles so that I am comfortable to understand other regional news
  • User stories can vary in granularity and be extremely detailed as well
